These outstanding students will each receive a share of a $3000 post-secondary scholarship for being the highest scoring Ontario students in this online investment challenge.
Two students have been named Champions of the JA Central Ontario Investment Strategies Program (ISP), sponsored by Finastra, a leading provider of technology solutions to financial institutions and corporates globally. These exceptional students have spent the past 6 weeks taking part in an online competition to build a successful investment portfolio, helping them to learn all about the ups and downs of trading on the stock market.
Richard Wu and Jack Lin, both Grade 11 students at Harbord Collegiate Institute, received the highest score across Ontario. As a result, they will each receive a $1500 post-secondary scholarship thanks to our generous sponsor.

“Finastra believes that the future of finance is open, and financial literacy is paramount to that ideal,” said Siobhan Byron, SVP, Technology Enabled Managed Solutions. “The missions of Finastra and Junior Achievement align closely, and we are proud to help students develop their financial learning as well as their life skills. As a company, we were championing each of the participants. Congratulations to the two winners of the ISP Challenge, we look forward to seeing how you further develop the skills learned in the competition as you enter post-secondary studies.”
Richard and Jack competed against over 600 teams across Ontario, and a total of 1570 teams nationwide. The aim of the program is to manage your investment portfolio to increase equity and raise more virtual funds than competing teams.
“The Stock Market Challenge from Finastra and Junior Achievement really helped me understand how stocks function and how people can use it to their advantage,” says Richard. “I think that this simulation is a tool that can be helpful to anybody interested in advancing their financial interests or to just better understand the economy. I genuinely enjoyed this experience and have come out of it with very useful knowledge.”
ISP uses live data from North American stock markets to teach students how to apply key investing principles in a real-world situation. This is a unique opportunity for students in grades 8 to 12 to experience the real-world of trading on the stock market. Competing against others across Canada, participants explore the different ways in which people save and invest for their future.
“Well done to all our ISP students – and a special congratulations to our winners,” says Jane Eisbrenner, CEO and President at JA Central Ontario. “This unique program gives students an insight into investment and financial planning – truly invaluable lessons in today’s changing world. We hope you are very proud of your achievements!”
