Volunteer Questions
Do I need previous teaching experience to Volunteer with JA Central Ontario?
No. You do not need any previous teaching experience to volunteer with JA Central Ontario. We simply ask that volunteers are comfortable speaking and presenting in front of a group of students.
How much time is needed to volunteer?
The time commitment depends on the program you choose.
- Elementary School Programs: Typically delivered in one full school day.
- High School Programs: Typically delivered in 75 minute sessions.
- JA Company Program: Approximately 10–12 sessions, each lasting 2–3 hours, delivered over a 16-week period.

Can I volunteer more than once?
Absolutely! We encourage volunteers to stay involved throughout the school year. JA Central Ontario offers multiple volunteer opportunities, including Community Volunteer Days and classroom programs.

What is covered during the volunteer orientation?
Volunteer orientation prepares you for a successful experience and includes:
- An overview of JA Central Ontario and our mission
- The different volunteer opportunities available
- A walkthrough of our online volunteer registration system
- Program expectations and classroom best practices
- Volunteer requirements, including the Vulnerable Sector Check process
What qualifications do I need to volunteer?
All JA Central Ontario volunteers must:
- Complete a Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC)
- Attend a volunteer training
- Be comfortable engaging and presenting to students
Why do I need a vulnerable sector check?
The safety and well-being of students is our highest priority.
A clear Vulnerable Sector Check is required for all volunteers because JA Central Ontario has both a legal and ethical responsibility to provide a safe environment for everyone we serve. This screening helps ensure the safety of students, volunteers, staff, and school communities.
The cost of the Vulnerable Sector Check is fully reimbursed by JA Central Ontario.
Does JA Central Ontario provide travel reimbursements for volunteers?
Volunteers are responsible for arranging and covering their own transportation to and from their volunteer assignment. Travel expenses are not reimbursed.
How many students are in a classroom?
Most classrooms have approximately 24-30 students, although class sizes may vary slightly depending on the school.
Do I need to bring my own laptop?
No. Program materials are accessed through JA Campus and can typically be presented using the school's classroom technology.
We recommend confirming with the classroom teacher in advance that a computer and internet connection will be available.
What if there are Wi-Fi or internet issues?
If you experience technical difficulties on the day of your program, contact your JA Coordinator. They can provide an offline version of the presentation so you can continue delivering the program with minimal disruption.
Who do I contact if I need help on the day of my volunteer assignment?
Your assigned JA Coordinator is your primary point of contact before and during your volunteer experience. If you have questions or encounter any issues, they are available to support you.
