History
Junior Achievement - Investing in Our Youth Junior Achievement International
Junior Achievement is an international not-for-profit organization that brings together business leaders, educators, parents and the community to help prepare youth for their future.
Horace A. Moses, Chairman of Strathmore Paper in Springfield, Massachusetts, founded the organization in 1919 when he recognized the need for practical economic education among city students. Since that time, Junior Achievement has expanded around the globe, enhancing the employability, life and entrepreneurial skills of more than 4.1 million students in 103 countries.
Junior Achievement of Canada
Junior Achievement was first introduced to Canada in 1955 when Ralph Baker, former President of the Standard Oil Company, recruited Vancouver’s business community to provide programs for 250 students. However, it wasn’t until 1967 that Junior Achievement of Canada was formed to oversee the growth and expansion of JA charters and programs. Since then, more than 1,000,000 Canadian students have gained valuable business and job skills through Junior Achievement programs.
Junior Achievement of Canada remains the nation’s largest developer of business education programs for students aged 10 to 19.
Junior Achievement of Central Ontario
In 2003, Junior Achievement of Toronto & York Region and Junior Achievement of Peel amalgamated to form Junior Achievement of Central Ontario. Junior Achievement of Central Ontario, encompassing Toronto, York Region, Peel & Simcoe, assumes the responsibility of bringing business education programs to a community of more than 825,000 students in eight boards of education and hundreds of private schools.
Junior Achievement of Toronto & York Region (JATYR) was founded in 1968 by the Young Presidents Organization to provide curriculum-enhancing programs to the region’s public, Catholic, French, and private school systems. Led by an engaged and influential Board of Governors and Directors, JATYR became the largest charter in Canada, having reached more than 750,000 students with business education programs.
Since 1981, Junior Achievement of Peel has partnered with businesses and community service groups to deliver JA programs to Peel Region and Simcoe County students in grades six through twelve. Widely recognized as a world leader in the delivery of the GLOBE (Global Learning of the Business Enterprise) program, Junior Achievement of Peel has also developed a core group of dedicated volunteers from the community.
Moving forward, Junior Achievement of Central Ontario (operating out of both Toronto and Mississauga locations) is committed to building and enhancing all stakeholder relationships so that increased numbers of students can be reached through Junior Achievement's relevant and meaningful programs.
