Company Program: A Student Venture empowers high school students to experience the risks and rewards of entrepreneurship by creating their own company. Through a fast paced experiential learning process, students will sell shares to raise capital, elect an executive, create and carry out a business plan, develop a budget, market and sell their product or service, develop a website and will liquidate their company at the conclusion of the program.

The day-to-day operations of this program are guided by committed mentors from the business community. This exciting program is designed for two different delivery experiences. The program can be delivered in-class to students in grades 10-12 over a twelve-week period or as the comprehensive extracurricular program including students from grades 9-12 over an 18-24 week venture.

Three Key Components of Company Program

  1. Planning: with the help of the business volunteer, students will familiarize themselves with the program while setting goals and visions for their company; conduct market research to determine a short list of possible products or services; evaluate and select the product or service; determine roles and responsibilities for each member; announce management elections; write company by-laws; apply for incorporation and work to create a business plan (4-6 sessions)
  2. Conducting Operations: students formulate a board of directors; outline parliamentary procedures; approve the business plan; prepare and operate the company; source materials/outline service schedules; proceed through production and sales activities; monitor the company's day-to-day operations and prepare for liquidation of assets (6-10 sessions).
  3. Wrapping Up: students wrap-up the operation of their company by liquidating the assets; prepare a final report for all shareholders; pay-out dividend cheques; hold a final board meeting and end with a discussion and evaluation of their venture experience (2-4 sessions).
